We were delighted to welcome back former student Oliver Surman (leaver 1995) for a special Year 9 assembly as part of the National Farmers’ Union ‘Farmers for Schools’ programme. Oliver delivered an engaging and thought-provoking talk about his journey into agriculture and the vital importance of British farming today. Reflecting on his own career path, Oliver spoke candidly about his time at The Chase, his progression through The Chase Sixth Form and university and his early working life in London - far removed from the world of farming. It wasn’t until the early 2000s that he returned to join the family farm in Upton-upon-Severn to embrace a career in agriculture. Oliver explored key issues facing British agriculture today, including sustainability, environmental stewardship, animal welfare and how diversification has helped bring additional income to the farm. He challenged students to think critically about where their food comes from and how farming impacts the planet.
Oliver discussed the wide range of career opportunities within the farming industry. He outlined the various routes into agriculture, including A Levels, T Levels, apprenticeships and university degrees, making it clear that the sector is open to a diverse range of skills and interests. Oliver’s visit was a powerful reminder that career journeys can take many forms and that agriculture is a forward-looking industry in need of passionate, skilled young people.
Rebecca, Year 9 student said: “ I found it interesting to learn where my food comes from. Since the assembly I have considered a role within agriculture as I find it an exciting field of work to be involved in. It was exciting to hear where Oliver ended up in life after his time at The Chase, especially as he didn’t know what he wanted to do in the future.”
“It was fantastic to welcome back Oliver to The Chase. It’s vital that our students understand the importance of food provenance, farming and the environment, not just as global issues, but as real career opportunities too. We extend our thanks to Oliver for sharing his story and inspiring students with his insights.” added Claire Finch, The Chase Careers Team.
