Marking Policy

Students' exercise books will be marked using the following system:

G+

Green for Go!  Congratulations!!
You  have fully understood and worked beyond the learning objectives
An excellent piece of work; complete, thorough and showing a full understanding.  If you achieve this grade often then you should ask your teacher how you can develop your interest in other ways.

G
Green for Go!! Well done!!
You have fully understood the learning objectives.

A very good piece of work; complete and showing a good understanding of the topic. If you achieve this grade often then try to target specific ways of improvement.
Y
Yellow for nearly on your way!! Fair!
You have understood some of the learning objectives.

Overall the work is good but some parts show an incomplete understanding or clear areas that need improvement.  If you get this grade often, remember to act on your teacher's advice.
R
Red for Stop! Sorry!
You have not understood the learning objectives.

 This work shows some basic understanding.  Some parts are incomplete or fail to show a full grasp of the topic.  This must be improved.  Make sure that you are always listening carefully when tasks are set.  You must ask your teacher for help, this lesson, to target ways to improve.

This work is not of an acceptable standard.  It must be done again after discussion with your teacher.

When a numerical mark is more suitable for a piece of work, e.g. factual content, mini test, etc. this will be awarded instead of a letter.

Marking Key

The following symbols will be used to help students to improve their written work:

Tick – you have been rewarded for good work. You have shown that you are able to demonstrate the skills necessary for the piece of work in hand.
X
Cross – you have been factually inaccurate in your work.

Underlining – this will be used to show where exactly in your work you have made errors.
Carat – this indicates that you have left something out (omitted it). The symbol points to the words that will be inserted by your teacher.
P
Punctuation – you have made a punctuation error; this will be corrected at the location of the error but the symbol may appear in the margin.
NP
New Paragraph – indicates that you should have begun a new paragraph at the line indicated.
Sp
Spelling – you have made a spelling error. These errors may be corrected and you should do your best to write out your corrections as required by your teacher.
Ti
To improve – what your teacher thinks you need to do to improve.
NFS
Sentence –not a full sentence

Effort will be marked on a five point scale:

  • 1 = Excellent
  • 2 = Good
  • 3 = Needs Improving
  • 4 = Unacceptable
